We would like to take this opportunity to invite you to the launch of RETRATOS DE INDEPENDENCIA: BICENTENNIAL PORTRAITS OF LATIN AMERICAN WOMEN IN ENGLAND
Photographs and Video Interviews by John Perivolaris
The Year 2010 marks the Bicentenary of Latin American Independence from Spain and Portugal. The Independence process began in 1810 and lasted over 20 years. Women played a major part in the conflict. Their contribution is only now being fully recognised though a few have been celebrated as national heroines and martyrs. After the wars women were expected to settle back into the old ways. It took more than another 100 years for women to gain some independence. Women’s suffrage was not granted in Argentina until 1946. What does Independence mean for Latin American women today?
To find out John Perivolaris, Nottingham based artist has interviewed Latin American women who are actively pursuing professional careers in the UK. What do they think about Latin American women’s independence today? The artist, John Perivolaris gratefully acknowledges that this project was made possible by a Fellowship awarded to him by the Centre of Advanced Studies, University of Nottingham.
This exhibition is part of research project at the University of Nottingham, directed by Catherine Davies, funded by Arts and Humanities Research Council and is part of New Art Exchange’s Latin programme supporting the Bicentenary year coinciding with the ‘Night of Festivals’, by Art Reach which takes place on 15th to 18th September in Old Market Square.
